Distractions

(This was written a few days ago. I know I should update about the food shortage and minor packing disasters, but I just want to sit here, drink a glass of sake and watch some brain numbing television via the internet.)

I’m on the Surfrider train coming back from LA to San Diego. I haven’t ridden on a train in a long while. It’s relaxing.

We went to Disneyland yesterday. We have food to pack, a car to sell and a million irritating details that need to be tended to but, when Disney calls, who can resist her siren song?

After yesterday, I might be able to.

It was a 15 hour  marathon session but this time I decided I wanted to retain my mellow and didn’t go on anything more stressful than The Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

Our target start date for the trail is April 10th (okay, maybe the 15th). The satellite phone arrived in the mail a few days ago along with the last of our bulk food orders. It looks like a joke cell phone from the 80′s. It’s the size of a brick. Now the only major things are to finish repackaging the food and label the boxes.

I keep thinking about what it’s going to be like the morning we actually start. How it will feel to get out of the car, say goodbye to our friends and start the walk down the trail. Also, it seems like the closer the time to leave approaches, the quieter I feel. This is probably good for me, but not so good for the blog. If I just post a large, empty page do you think you could just interpret it as serenity and glean what you want?

I’ve gotten a great response from couchsurfers for the first five hundred or so miles of the trail. But after that, the population of California thins out and our support group dwindles. I’m extremely happy for the support we are getting though. I think it will be a few hundred miles until we hit our stride and having nice people to meet up and possibly a hot shower and warm bed will really be a morale boost.
